Overview

Tara Koot evaluates the destiny and fortune compatibility between the couple by analyzing the relative positions of their birth stars (nakshatras). It determines whether the union brings mutual prosperity or misfortune. With 3 maximum points, it reflects the cosmic alignment of luck and fate between partners.

Detailed Description

Tara Koot, also known as Dina Koot, assesses compatibility based on the counting of nakshatras from one partner's birth star to the other's. The 27 nakshatras are divided into 9 groups of 3, called Tara groups: Janma (birth), Sampat (wealth), Vipat (danger), Kshema (prosperity), Pratyari (obstacle), Sadhaka (achievement), Vadha (death), Mitra (friend), and Ati-Mitra (great friend). The nakshatra count from the boy's star to the girl's and vice versa determines which Tara group the partner falls into. Even-numbered Tara groups (2, 4, 6, 8) are considered auspicious, while odd-numbered groups (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) require careful evaluation. Good Tara ensures that the couple's combined destinies create prosperity rather than obstacles.

How It Works

Count the nakshatras from the boy's birth nakshatra to the girl's birth nakshatra (inclusive). Divide the result by 9. The remainder determines the Tara: 1=Janma, 2=Sampat, 3=Vipat, 4=Kshema, 5=Pratyari, 6=Sadhaka, 7=Vadha, 8=Mitra, 0(9)=Ati-Mitra. Repeat the count from the girl's nakshatra to the boy's. If both remainders fall in auspicious taras (Sampat, Kshema, Sadhaka, Mitra, Ati-Mitra - positions 2, 4, 6, 8, 9), full 3 points are awarded. If only one is auspicious, 1.5 points are given. If both are inauspicious (Janma, Vipat, Pratyari, Vadha - positions 1, 3, 5, 7), 0 points are scored.

Scoring Criteria

  • Both partners' Tara remainders are auspicious (2, 4, 6, 8, 9): 3 points (full score)
  • One partner's Tara is auspicious, the other is inauspicious: 1.5 points
  • Both partners' Tara remainders are inauspicious (1, 3, 5, 7): 0 points
  • Auspicious Taras: Sampat (2), Kshema (4), Sadhaka (6), Mitra (8), Ati-Mitra (9)
  • Inauspicious Taras: Janma (1), Vipat (3), Pratyari (5), Vadha (7)

Significance

Tara Koot holds significant importance as it directly relates to the destiny and fortune a couple will share. It indicates whether being together amplifies prosperity, health, and happiness or brings unfortunate circumstances. A good Tara score suggests that the couple's combined karmic paths support each other, leading to shared success and well-being. Poor Tara compatibility can indicate that the union may attract obstacles, health issues, or financial difficulties that neither would face individually.

Score Interpretation

Full Points (3)

Full 3 points in Tara Koot signify that both partners bring auspicious fortune to each other's lives. Their combined destinies are aligned for mutual prosperity, good health, and shared happiness. The union itself becomes a source of luck and positive karma for both individuals.

Zero Points

Zero points in Tara Koot indicate that both partners fall in inauspicious Tara groups relative to each other. This suggests the union may attract obstacles, health concerns, or periods of misfortune. The combined karmic paths may create friction rather than harmony, requiring conscious effort and remedial measures to overcome.

Impact on Marriage

Tara compatibility influences the overall fortune and timing of events in married life. Well-matched Tara brings synchronous good periods where both partners prosper together, smooth transitions during life changes, and a general sense of being "lucky together." Poor Tara matching can manifest as one partner's good phase coinciding with the other's challenging period, creating a seesaw effect that strains the relationship. It also affects the couple's shared health trajectory and financial fortunes over the long term.

Exceptions & Special Cases

  • If the birth nakshatras of both partners are the same, Tara dosha is nullified regardless of the count
  • When the nakshatra lords (ruling planets) are mutual friends, Tara defect loses its potency
  • If Bhakoot and Nadi both score full points, Tara defect is considered overcome by stronger positive factors
  • Tara dosha from the boy's side is given less weight than from the girl's side in some traditions
